On Saturday 27 February 2010 the Australian Army Rugby League team will once again play Bellingen Valley/Dorrigo Rugby League team in what is turning out to be an annual event.   This day for footy lovers is being played in honour of the memory of the late Sergeant Matthew Locke from Bellingen who was killed in action in 2007 whilst serving Australia in Afghanistan.

Proceeds raised will go to Legacy charged with the task of caring for the widows and dependants of servicemen lost in conflict, ‘The Grub Club Education Fund’ raising money to help build a school in East Timor and supply resources to schools in Afghanistan and locally to help the local lads in the Junior Rugby League.

Last year was a close hard fought match with former hometown boys currently serving in the Army up against their old club Bellingen and it is hoped they will be returning to settle some old scores in 2010.    Captain of the Army Thunder, Sergeant Nicholas Matthews and his brother Captain Brenden Matthews, are from Urunga and Craftsman Lewis Balcomb is from Bellingen.   Both the Matthews and Balcomb families have close ties with the Bellingen Valley Rugby League club.   Graham (Mushy) Matthews and John Balcomb both captain/coached the club during their football careers.

Supporters should expect a carnival atmosphere with junior and reserve matches before the main event and raffles and auctions throughout. The Army recruiting van will be present on the day so anyone out there interested in an exciting career come along and see what job opportunities there are available. Following the main game a function will be held at the Diggers Tavern.

All are encouraged to come along and support The Matthew Locke Memorial Rugby League Charity Match enriching many lives.
